The story behind this painting is fascinating, at least to me. After visiting the local aquarium, I was determined to do a painting about jelly fish, because they’re awesome. So I painted a tank, created the jelly fish and all was going well…until…for a reason unknown to me at the time, I inserted myself into the tank. Well, after that, the jelly fish seemed irrelevant but those pretty little fish just had to have a home. Then the tank became irrelevant and was replaced by the Mason jar because by then, I knew what I was doing, thank God! So this painting became both a very personal statement about confinement and perseverance and a political statement about art and its modern meaning. One of the reasons I paint is to enjoy the fluidity and the surprises that the creative process brings about. The evolution of this painting is a perfect example of what I mean.

I believe that you are the one and only comment that I’ve had in two years. And I don’t even know how to respond. I am the world’s lousiest business person. I just make the stuff. Thinking about what to do with it afterwards makes me shrivel up like a dried pepper.
